Santa Scramble

Twelve adults and juniors braved the bitter cold today to play in our Santa Scramble. Fantastic score of nett 31 for 10 holes by Louis and Daniel (assisted by Michael). Santa is going to review handicaps over Christmas 😉🎅. Great tales of bouncing balls and well used hand warmers afterwards in the clubhouse.

Autumn update

There has been so much happening and to round off the season by winning the Scottish Junior Team Championships is just incredible. (See previous post).  The season is nearing an end and unfortunately the medal winners medal had to be abandoned on Saturday due to a torrential downpour and hailstones! The 36 hole scratch Strokeplay trophy takes place this Saturday (8th October) and on Sunday Cameron Ledingham, Mark Brooks, Danny Hendry, Sam Hall, Sam Westwood, Lucy Morrison, Megan Linton, Emily Rigg all take part in The Stephen Gallacher Foundation Race to Dunbar finals.

Winter coaching starts at the Braids this Saturday at 3pm. We will also be holding monthly 10 hole Adult/Junior scrambles once a month on Saturday afternoons, with times staring from 1pm. Dates are:

  • Saturday 28 October
  • Saturday 18 November
  • Saturday 9 December
  • Saturday 20 January
  • Saturday 24 February

You can enter as a team of one adult and two juniors.  The adult does not need to be a member. Or three juniors can enter as a team, but one must have a handicap of 18 or less. Or you can enter as an individual or a as two and we will try to team you up. Open to ALL junior members.

Those with handicaps can enter online.  For juniors without handicaps please email us at cpjuniorgolf@gmail.com  to enter no later than the Wednesday morning before the event.

Conor O'Toole was selected  to play in the Italian International Individual Under 16s Championship and put in some great performances in a very strong field, reducing his handciap to 1 into the bargain. He was also part of a 3 man Scottish Golf team competing for the Nations Cup at the event.

Sam Hall has continued his amazing year with even more silverware, In the Independent Schools Golf Association tournament at Kingsacre, he won the U15 Boys Competition with a 69.  He followed this up by recording the best scratch score of 69 over a very windy Strathtyrum Course (St Andrews) in the St Leonards National U15 Junior Golf Championships.  Not to be outdone, sister Lucy, was third scratch and handicap in the U13 event at Craigielaw.

Our Tiger Cubs have been busy as well.  Congratulations to new members Craig and Katie MacKenzie on gaining their bronze certificates and many thanks to some of our more experienced junior members who have been out playing with and encouraging the Tiger Cubs.  Great to see.

We also held a very successful Pig Racing night on Saturday 23rd September.  This was the night before the Scottish Team Championships and although the organisers were very tired it obviously didn't affect the team.  Now we know how to prepare for big events in the future! This was a well attended, fun family evening. Thank you very much to all our sponsors, to everyone who bought pigs and all who contributed on the night. We raised a fantastic amount of money for our junior funds and some of the money raised will be donated to charity (to be decided).

Scottish Junior Team Champions!

The inaugural event was  hosted by Glenbervie Golf Club on Sunday the 24th August 2017.  The winning teams from Junior Leagues all over Scotland, plus several teams from areas currently without Junior Leagues, entered the event. Each Team had 6 Players and there was some excellent scoring under the singles Stableford format, with the best 5 out of 6 scores to count.

We were out in the first groups at 9.30. It rained most of the day and to be fair we were lucky to be out early. We nervously waited all day as the teams and scores came in, but in the end emerged victorious with some very consistent scoring. Sam Hall led the way with 38, followed by Cameron Ledingham with 36,  Alessio Margiotta and Mark Brooks both with 35, and  Conor O’Toole with 34. These 5 scores totaled 178 and were so good that the score by late substitute Lucy Morrison was able to be discarded. This was a great Team performance!

We were awarded a Trophy kindly donated by Ian Howarth, Past President of the SGU, and each player received a commemorative medal. The R&A kindly donated prizes of golf shirts, flags, and balls from the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, and the leading 4 Teams all received prizes.

In the end we romped in 14 points ahead of Alloa Golf Club representing Stirlingshire, who also demonstrated the value of consistency with 5 scores all in the range of 32 to 35 for a total of 164.

Well done everyone who played on the day, especially Lucy who had a very late call up and was woken up at 7.30 in the morning as poor Danny was unwell!  And congratulations to all who played in the league matches and helped get us to this event.  I hope everyone will attend prize giving on Saturday 11 November when I think a big celebration is in order!

Well done Morganne

Congratulations to Morganne McQueen who finished 2nd in under 14 girls flag event at the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Finals at Kingsfield  on Saturday.

Team Golf National Championships

It wasn't our day at Scotscraig yesterday.  The team gave their all in pretty awful conditions and are determined to come back stronger next year. Congratulations to winners Lundin Links. Great to get as far as we did and we have the Scottish team championships in two weeks time. Well done everyone. We may not have played our best but as usual we were gracious and courteous in defeat.  If there was a prize for having fun, supporting each other and eating, we would win hands down. (Led by Cameron on the eating side!)

Thanks for all the support from parents, family and members.

Edinburgh Junior League Champions 2017!

What a day and a nail-biting finish! Edinburgh Junior League Champions 2017! The matches were all very tight with wins for Danny, Cameron and Lucy, but importantly the others taking their matches as far as possible (Sam and Mark to 18) and the result was a 3-3 draw. On count-back (holes up) we were level as well at 5-5. So Sam Hall, as our number 1, had the unenviable task of playing sudden death. But he was well up to the challenge and won on the 2nd extra hole. And so we won the trophy for the 2nd time ever, the last being 1984. Well done team and that includes all who played in the group matches, quarters, semis and finals. You have done your club proud not just by your golf but by your fantastic attitude, sportsmanship and support for each other. Thanks also to all our magic supporters.

Well done everyone who contributed to this success by playing in the group and knock-out stages:
Alessio Margiotta
Blair Welsh
Cameron Ledingham
Callum Murison
Conor O'Toole
Danny Hendry
Georgia Ledingham
Lucy Morrison
Lucy Hall
Mark Brooks
Matthew Nicoll
Sam Hall

And to Team Manager Susan Corrie, Club Captain George Hunter, and all the parents, family and supporters.

There has been so much happening with our juniors I can hardly keep up!

Lucy Morrison has just won the East Lothian Girls Championship today at Gullane no.2 with a scratch 79 which included a back nine of -2. Brilliant stuff Lucy!

Sam Hall played in English Boys' Under 14's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (Reid Trophy) this week. He made the cut with ease and despite being disappointed with his 3rd round put in a fantastic performance.  Well done Sam!

Our junior team achieved a well-fought 3-3 draw with Mortonhall yesterday in the junior league quarter finals, leaving all to play for in the 2nd leg at home next Friday. Come on team - we can do it!

Hannah Coull gained her first handicap and Oliver Livingston, playing in his first competition, had 49 points in the midweek stableford!

Keep it going everyone!

Junior success stories

Congratulations to Lucy Morrison who has had a fantastic few weeks reducing her handicap to 9. She followed up a nett 64 in the weekend medal with 49 points in Thursdays midweek stableford.  She also reached the semi final of the East of Scotland Girls Championship last week losing to the eventual winner Eilidh Henderson (Loretto) and had a solid performance in the Scottish under 16 Girls Open over the past two days. Well done Lucy!

Blair Welsh won the 10-14 year old category in the Dunbar Junior Open last week with a nett 68.

Commiserations to Sam Hall and Conor O'Toole who finished on +4 and +5 for 36 holes at the Scottish under 16s. They both narrowly missed the cut which was at +3 in a strong international field. Good performances from both.

Sam Hall halved his foursomes match and won his singles in the Lothian's Under 14's Boys team who beat  Perth & Kinross Under 14's Boys 9-3 at Royal Burgess GC yesterday (17 July).

Conor O'Toole is currently playing in the English Boys' Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (McGregor Trophy) this week at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club in Somerset. Good luck Conor - bunkers look interesting!

Scottish Junior Open Troon

Brilliant experience for Blair Welsh, Lucy Hall and Toby Appleyard, led by captain fantastic Iain Welsh at the Scottish Junior Open in sunny Troon. The team had a better ball score of 57 - which you would think was absolutely fantastic on a long links course, but it wasn't quite good enough with two 54's and a 56!  But they all played really well and represented the club really well also.

Normal service resumed ...summer update

Sorry we have had a break in service as yours truly blogmaster has been on holiday! There is a lot to catch up on .....

Firstly, the junior championship.  Congratulations to our new junior champion Mark Brooks.  Congratulations to runner up and defending champion Danny Hendry and semi-finalists Alessio Margiotta  and Cameron Ledingham.

Scottish Boys and Girls Amateur Championship

I don't need that ladder!

Five of our members took part in the first ever joint Scottish Boys' and Girls' Championship; Lucy Morrison, Mark Brooks, Sam Hall, Danny Hendry and Conor O'Toole. Sam and Conor both made the cut and progressed to the match-play stages losing narrowly in the second round. Danny nearly got there too but lost out narrowly due to wee blip at the end of his second strokeplay round.  They will come back fighting next year with all the more experience.

Congratulations to Conor O'Toole who has been selected to represent Scotland in an under 16 friendly match against an under 16 French team this weekend at The Kittocks in St Andrews. Conor has also managed to secure a place in the English Boys' U16 Open Amateur Stroke Play (McGregor Trophy) starting on 18 July in a strong international field.
