Autumn update

There has been so much happening and to round off the season by winning the Scottish Junior Team Championships is just incredible. (See previous post).  The season is nearing an end and unfortunately the medal winners medal had to be abandoned on Saturday due to a torrential downpour and hailstones! The 36 hole scratch Strokeplay trophy takes place this Saturday (8th October) and on Sunday Cameron Ledingham, Mark Brooks, Danny Hendry, Sam Hall, Sam Westwood, Lucy Morrison, Megan Linton, Emily Rigg all take part in The Stephen Gallacher Foundation Race to Dunbar finals.

Winter coaching starts at the Braids this Saturday at 3pm. We will also be holding monthly 10 hole Adult/Junior scrambles once a month on Saturday afternoons, with times staring from 1pm. Dates are:

  • Saturday 28 October
  • Saturday 18 November
  • Saturday 9 December
  • Saturday 20 January
  • Saturday 24 February

You can enter as a team of one adult and two juniors.  The adult does not need to be a member. Or three juniors can enter as a team, but one must have a handicap of 18 or less. Or you can enter as an individual or a as two and we will try to team you up. Open to ALL junior members.

Those with handicaps can enter online.  For juniors without handicaps please email us at cpjuniorgolf@gmail.com  to enter no later than the Wednesday morning before the event.

Conor O'Toole was selected  to play in the Italian International Individual Under 16s Championship and put in some great performances in a very strong field, reducing his handciap to 1 into the bargain. He was also part of a 3 man Scottish Golf team competing for the Nations Cup at the event.

Sam Hall has continued his amazing year with even more silverware, In the Independent Schools Golf Association tournament at Kingsacre, he won the U15 Boys Competition with a 69.  He followed this up by recording the best scratch score of 69 over a very windy Strathtyrum Course (St Andrews) in the St Leonards National U15 Junior Golf Championships.  Not to be outdone, sister Lucy, was third scratch and handicap in the U13 event at Craigielaw.

Our Tiger Cubs have been busy as well.  Congratulations to new members Craig and Katie MacKenzie on gaining their bronze certificates and many thanks to some of our more experienced junior members who have been out playing with and encouraging the Tiger Cubs.  Great to see.

We also held a very successful Pig Racing night on Saturday 23rd September.  This was the night before the Scottish Team Championships and although the organisers were very tired it obviously didn't affect the team.  Now we know how to prepare for big events in the future! This was a well attended, fun family evening. Thank you very much to all our sponsors, to everyone who bought pigs and all who contributed on the night. We raised a fantastic amount of money for our junior funds and some of the money raised will be donated to charity (to be decided).

Scottish Junior Team Champions!

The inaugural event was  hosted by Glenbervie Golf Club on Sunday the 24th August 2017.  The winning teams from Junior Leagues all over Scotland, plus several teams from areas currently without Junior Leagues, entered the event. Each Team had 6 Players and there was some excellent scoring under the singles Stableford format, with the best 5 out of 6 scores to count.

We were out in the first groups at 9.30. It rained most of the day and to be fair we were lucky to be out early. We nervously waited all day as the teams and scores came in, but in the end emerged victorious with some very consistent scoring. Sam Hall led the way with 38, followed by Cameron Ledingham with 36,  Alessio Margiotta and Mark Brooks both with 35, and  Conor O’Toole with 34. These 5 scores totaled 178 and were so good that the score by late substitute Lucy Morrison was able to be discarded. This was a great Team performance!

We were awarded a Trophy kindly donated by Ian Howarth, Past President of the SGU, and each player received a commemorative medal. The R&A kindly donated prizes of golf shirts, flags, and balls from the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, and the leading 4 Teams all received prizes.

In the end we romped in 14 points ahead of Alloa Golf Club representing Stirlingshire, who also demonstrated the value of consistency with 5 scores all in the range of 32 to 35 for a total of 164.

Well done everyone who played on the day, especially Lucy who had a very late call up and was woken up at 7.30 in the morning as poor Danny was unwell!  And congratulations to all who played in the league matches and helped get us to this event.  I hope everyone will attend prize giving on Saturday 11 November when I think a big celebration is in order!
